Private Security Profession Map

In 2023 on the back of SIA recommendations, we embarked on a project to define industry good practice in terms of security provision and the capabilities that would underpin quality assured industry CPD.

We consulted with the chartered Institute for Professional Development (CIPD) to determine what their process had been to develop their highly regarded profession map. We then developed a paper which set out what a framework could look like, the benefits to industry and a suggested project timeline.

We worked together with the SIA and their skills team who commissioned some qualitative and qualitative research into key industry skills, knowledge, values, and behaviours. We then put out a call for industry to come together as a working group comprising senior security professionals, education, and HR specialists during 2023/2024, to develop a universal industry level capability framework, career pathway and career planning guide which form the new private security profession map. The map will be refreshed every 18 months to keep this aligned with developments in industry security, technological requirements and skills needs.

The new map is now available in PDF form to download here and will form the foundation on which the future National Skills Academy for Private Security CPD will be developed. Work is currently underway to start this process.

The map, design and all content are copyright protected and owned by the Security Skills Board and the National Skills Academy CIC. © All rights reserved.

A digital map will be available in phase two which will be available through the Academy website and combined with a new digital Security Industry Skills Passport which will detail vetting information, careers and capability-based professional development and records.

Benefits of the profession map

The profession map includes a capability framework, a career pathway from front-line professional through to CEO, a career guide and planning tool. It can be used by employers and security professionals in the following ways:

Skills Identification

To identify skills and learning gaps between current and future bands and (in time), what CPD will be available to support career progression.

Progression Planning

To understand what a career journey may look like, what capabilities will be required for development to that band level and what steps might be needed to plan for progression.

Career Progression Bands

The Profession map includes bands 1 to 5 and capabilities are generalised. They are aligned with both SIA licence linked training and the Level 2 PSO Apprenticeship standards at band 1. Bands do not reflect every industry security role as the working group felt that this would be too complex. It does include key roles and is accessible to everyone employer, regardless of whether an employer has their own framework or not.

Recruitment

Band capabilities can be used for recruitment and/or assessment centre purposes to determine whether someone has the required capabilities and behaviours at each band level.

Approved CPD Courses

Band capabilities will underpin all future National Skills Academy approved CPD courses, programmes, and qualifications to enable security professionals and employers to navigate, plan, develop and realise career progression goals.
