Momentum Security Career Mentor Programme

What is Momentum?

A newly designed pilot career mentoring programme launched early this year, by the Security Skills Board to develop and retain talent currently working in the private security industry. An opportunity for private security employers to invest in their people and to give back to the industry. The pilot Momentum Security Career Mentor Programme was created to bridge the current gap of private security industry mentors previously identified through SIA funded survey results and frequently discussed at industry stakeholder meetings.

Candidate applications were assessed during the recruitment process against core capabilities from the Private Security Profession Map with a range of talented individuals applying, giving a successful pilot cohort of 21 mentors across England & Wales. The biggest takeaway from the recruitment process, was having 9 women onboard the programme to showcase gender diversity at schools, colleges and careers fairs which will have significant impact.

This programme also has huge social value with 6 out of the 21 places sponsored directly by collaborative industry investment, making it inclusive for Micros & SME’s, which is a fantastic giving back message from the Board. The cohort also demonstrates the diverse nature of those who work in the industry covering a variety of sectors and locations across the UK, from front line operators to support roles such as HR.

During the next 12 months they will complete a CMI Level 3 Certificate in Coaching & Mentoring.

To achieve this qualification learners are required to achieve the following 3 units:

• Principles, Skills and Impact of Coaching and Mentoring
• Coaching Mentoring Processes
• Coaching and Mentoring Relationships

There are 3 key skills they will acquire in order to attain their qualification:

• Communication
• People Skills & Practice
• Professional Development

Feedback on the programme so far

Program Sponsor – Rosa Osman

“The Momentum programme is progressing really well, and it’s been fantastic to see how engaged the cohort is. The outreach element has been especially powerful- delegates are actively taking part in conference panel discussions, delivering speed mentoring sessions to teams, and representing the industry at careers fairs. It’s a great opportunity to promote the security profession, and our ambassadors are doing an outstanding job showcasing their skills and commitment”

From our Mentors

Attending these events and reaching out to the local community has allowed our cohort the platform to showcase the Private Security Industry and the endless opportunities the industry has to offer. Sharing their experience, knowledge, processes and various career paths the Security Industry has to offer. They have been hugely successful and impactful, engaging with people of all ages, across all areas of the UK, from a range of different backgrounds. It has also allowed our cohort the opportunity to show-off their newly learnt skills, mentoring and coaching their peers already working in the industry.

“Generally, there is clear evidence of students putting a lot of time and effort in both learning the subject and more importantly putting this knowledge into practical use. Within the assignments there have been some very good answers that clearly highlight that there is a good level of research and development that creates a greater understanding of the subject.”

Feedback From Attendees

Feedback provided further highlighted the fact that there was a clear lack of understanding about the variety of roles, skills and opportunities the Private Security Industry has to offer. These sessions, presentations and demonstrations have been really well received across the board and have had a hugely positive impact changing people’s perception of what working in security really is, what it could be and has to offer as a career of choice.

What did you learn or enjoy about the session?

” The experience”
” Getting to go out and see where people work”
” The atmosphere”
” All of it”
” The “mad wee guy from Inverness” and his stories. His career was interesting going from cadets to where he is now”
” What SecuriGroup and SGL do, and where they work. Ways that they help people in danger, and opportunities for apprenticeships and jobs in security.”

Would you be interested in more mentoring or support?

What did you gain the most from this sessions?

Do you feel more confident?

“It is lovely to see how the group are forming and working together to support one another within workshops. It is really evident to see knowledge individuals are learning and then how they are applying their learning to their practice to support them in the coaching and mentoring role. Confidence has really grown in individuals, and we have really seen this from the first workshop to the second workshop. Individuals are showing great commitment and dedication to completing their assignments and meeting deadlines.
Lovely to hear all the wonderful examples that is being carried out to support individuals on the momentum programme.”
